Bert & May's new Organic tile collection
There’s something about tiles that stands out as an interior choice – they offer the potential for adding colour, pattern and personality that few other surfaces match. Encaustic tiles in particular, with their striking Moorish designs, are enjoying something of a revival, and the new Organics collection from Bert & May epitomises everything we love about them.
Responding to the trend for understated design, Founders and tile designers of Bert & May, Lee Thornley and Harriet Roberts experiment with natural pigment and pattern, using traditional techniques to create artisan tiles that are perfectly in tune with contemporary interiors.
‘Our Organics collection has been designed with easy living in mind; the soft colour palette and organic designs have a heritage feel with a contemporary twist’, says Lee. We couldn’t agree more. The collection is versatile, working equally well with modern and traditional interiors. Simple geometric patterns compliment the clean lines of Mid-Century or minimalist interiors, while the more intricate designs have a more traditional feel.
Both Lee, and his business partner Harriet Roberts, share a firm belief that colour is just as important as design. Soft shades of green, pink and grey are reminiscent of muted tones found in nature – think just-sprouting leaves, stems and freshly-bloomed petals.
How best to use in the home? For an injection of colour and character in neutral rooms, consider patchwork-style floors and walls. Despite Organics natural palette, it can still feel like a bold move, so ease yourself in gently by experimenting with smaller areas first, such as a splash-back or hearth.
Organics is just the latest in a wonderful array of in-house collections, all of which depict the brand’s passion for relaxed, easy living. They sit alongside a vast array of original tiles, reclaimed from all across Europe. Incorporating these into your patchwork tiling is a lovely way of adding personality, not to mention authenticity, too.
If you want to see the collections up close, visit one of the company’s showrooms situated in Leeds and Yorkshire as well as both East and West London. You can also book a design consultation (also available online) if you’re looking for inspiration; the brand’s experienced team will are more than happy to help you work through the best options for your space.
