See Inside Karl Lagerfeld's Fabulous Hamburg Home
If you've ever wondered what kind of a home Karl Lagerfeld lived in, now's your chance to find out. When his opulent former home in Hamburg, “Villa Jako”,went on sale it was complete with customary promotional pictures that offer a peek through the keyhole into his opulent lifestyle.
The glamorous Romanesque 1920s hilltop villa wasnamed after the fashion icon's partner Jacques de Bascher, and sits in the city's swishBlankenese district, overlooking theRiver Elbe.
The propertyis designed in the style of a Roman villa, with an impressive façade with columns inspired by classical designs.
Designed byarchitectWalter Baedeker, the villa is all about striking symmetry, grand dimensions andopulent neo-classical details such as the covered Roman pool right in the foyer and decorative columns throughout.
Lagerfeld bought the property in the early1990s, renaming it “Villa Jako”in honour of his long-term partner, Parisian socialite Jacques de Bascher, who died in 1989. The couple were big fans of luxe materials, with marble a clear favourite.
Set on a hill, the villa spans almost 12,000 square metreswith unobstructable views of the river, and plenty of space for practising catwalk moves.
A grandiose living room spans the entire length of the property, with original herringbone parquet floors and six-metre ceilings decorated in golf leaf and soaring up to six metres, stately hall-style.
There's a glass dome in the atrium, and one of the hallways is transformed into a library with bookshelves and plush velvet drapery.
Round-arched glass doorways open directly onto the garden and terrace, leading to sweeping views of the River Elbe.
Turquoise silk-lined walls and elaborate plasterwork, withgold leaf-painted ceilings...
Lagerfeld lived there in the Nineties but actually parted ways with the house in 1998 – although the current owner has retained most of its extravagant features, including the gold leaf-painted ceilings.
The villa's impressive grounds featured in Lagerfeld's campaign forhis Jako fragrance, and also featured in Lagerfeld's bookEin Deutsches Haus (A German House).
The property was listed with Engel & Völkers. The asking price was 10 million euros, but you never know, they might be open to offers...
