Fabulous flooring that's both cool and cosy
rum punch
We’ve long been fans of textile teamA Rum Fellow, not least for its well- travelled aesthetic but for its focus on supporting artisan weavers and female cooperatives overseas. Hikira, one offour new flatware rugs, takes the minute weave detail of indigenous hand-woven textiles as its starting point before blowing them up to create scaled-up artworks for the floor. We’re into its utterly of-the-moment pink and red colour pairing, too.
THE POWER COUPLE
The Rug Company’s latest collaboration is with Greek-born, London-based fashion designer Mary Katrantzou. Blown-up florals rub shoulders with dramatic sunray prints and monochrome micro florals across hand-knotted Tibetan wool and silk. Framis (pictured) does a paint-by-numbers take on animal print in jewel and pearly grey tones.
THE TUBE
TfL’s iconic seat patterns, just relaunched as luxury upholstery velvets in Kirkby Design’s second Underground collection, are AW19’s ‘It’ buy. We’re applauding their potential to make you fall in love with the Central line again.
ZIG-A-ZIG
Invest in any rug with Patricia Urquiola's name on it and laying it on the floor might feel like a disservice. Her Mirage collection for GAN in pure New Zealand wool features bands of tonal colour in zigzag patterns, all creating the illusion of movement and a 3D quality exaggerated by the extended edges.

RETRO STRIPES
Looking to add a little seventies feel to your interiors? Go for slim stripes in a palette of classic shades. Crucial Trading has perfected the look with its 100% wool Spirit collection, featuring all-flattering, room-lengthening carpets with design names every bit as evocative. Choose from Red Passion, Amber Glow and Black Coffee.
ROUND THE TWIST
Another underfoot statement from Patricia Urquiola comes courtesy of her recent collection for cc-tapis. Not to be confused with the plastic children's toy (though clearly inspired by it), each Slinkie design features graduating bands of colour spiralling across a blend of silk and wool.
PLUSH HOUR
Style Library (home to Zoffany, Sanderson, Morris & Co, et al) and Alternative Flooring's Boutique carpet collection is inspired by five signature designs from Zoffany's fabric range. Should you be torn between a carpet and a stone floor, Serpentine in Malachite translates the wavy quality of marble onto a hand-tufted pile.
stormy weather
Good news for those who like their flooring and furnishings to come with the gravitas of a Caravaggio painting. Rug master Jan Kath's Cloud series draws on inspiration from Baroque sky-scapes, spanning biblical lightning bolts and painterly skies.
Considering each is hand-spun from Tibetan wool and silk, this collection is set to cause quite a storm.
