Today, luxury interiors boutique Amara announced the winner of its Amara Student Interior Design Competition, with KLC School of Design. The competition was open exclusively to students at KLC – thecareer-focused interior and garden design school based at the heart of London's Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour. The students were given a detailed brief to create a scheme for a one bedroom ground floor apartment for a young couple, and asked to submit a moodboard, floorplan and design statement.
Our own Mary Weaver was on the judging panel, picking the three final designs that will now be part of KLC’s Summer Graduation Show and also be featured on Amara’s website.
'I really enjoyed participating in the Amara/KLC judging on behalf of Livingetc,' says Mary, 'and felt that the overall standard of work was high with much professionalism shown throughout. There was an interesting variety of projects to choose from but the eventual winners were chosen for their stand-out designs that also fulfilled the brief.'
Here are Mary's thoughts on the three winners and their designs.
OVERALL WINNER HARRIET BALL
'A wow factor living room that ticks all the boxes, combining colour, comfort, plenty of seating, including an innovative window seat, lots of storage and lovely layering of textures.'
'Harriet fulfilled the brief at every level with a brilliantly presented see-at-a glance budget sheet with the overall cost coming in at a very respectable figure, honouring the first-time owner’s budget.'
'Good thought process throughout, technical ability, well researched and presented sample board and excellent finished visual. I think the owners would be desperate to move in!'
RUNNER UP ROXANA SHAFIEE
'A lovely and professional execution, which demonstrates her style and confidence. An excellent, illustrated budget that came in at a good price, plus a good lighting plan and beautiful sample board.'
'Her finished sketch combined with visuals of actual objects made for an interesting and inspiring presentation.'

RUNNER UP MELANIE HAYNES
'A well thought-out bedroom. Very on trend with jute, rattan and carved wood pieces that also ticks lots of ethical boxes. Her illustrated and very detailed budget was excellent, and the finished visual very appealing.'
