Shop of the month: The New Craftsmen
We met with the team at the New Craftsmen, and asked the questions you'd want to know..
So what’s this contemporary craft thing all about?
In a world where we are forever being sold the machine-made and mass-produced, high-street retail executive Catherine Lock spotted a gap in the market fora space that promoted unique, handmade objects and the committed artisans who make them. The result was the 2012 formation of The New Craftsmen, a fabulous homeware boutique that has injected the British craft scene with fresh energy and brought it into the 21st century.
Are there any makers weshould watch out for?
There are movers and shakers aplenty to be found under the spotlight at this space. We’re crushing hard on the soliddesigns of upcoming talent Malgorzata Bany, who has become a master of the material Jesmonite. From this composite mix of plaster and resin, she creates supremely stylish furniture and accessories with a cool minimalist edge.
Ceramics are well represented by a variety of potters, including scene-stealer Akiko Hirai and her rough, textured vessels, alongside the tumbling, architectural wares of Adam Ross – and Sebastian Cox’s scorched furniture, made from blackened chestnut and ash, will stop you dead in your tracks.
Michael Ruh’s deceptively simple Chelsea jars showcase the imperfect beauty of handmade glassware. Also check out Rose de Borman’s richly screen-printed and vivid cushions and textiles.
Any exciting new developments happening at the shop?
Of course! The team has recently launched its latest venture, The studio. Occupying a refurbished area in the main boutique, the space responds to a growing demand among The New Craftsmen’s clients for bespoke and customisable products. The studio showcases a range of one-of-a-kind pieces that are made to order.
Our favourite thing?
Ekta Kaul’s personalised story maps – gorgeous, monochromatic wall hangings that plot out key life events, places and motifs of your most treasured locations on hand- stitched maps. Sentimentality with stylish sophistication.
And where is this emporiumof all things artisanal?
34 North Row, London, W1K 6DG.
