The iconic Series 7 chair is now available in velvet
Designed in 1955 by the illustrious Danish architect, Arne Jacobsen, the original 3107 chair is perhaps most famous for being incorrectly immortalised in the iconic Christine Keeler shot, taken at the height of the Profumo affair in the 60s (the chair in the photograph was indeed a high street copy).
One of the 20th century's most successful furniture designs, manufactured by Fritz Hansen, the 3107 is now more widely referred to as the Series 7™ (due to 7 variations including a bar stool and swivel chair available).
It is by far the most sold chair in the history of Fritz Hansen – and it is suggested, in furniture history.
This year Fritz Hansen has introduced the Series 7™ chair in velvet upholstery, pairing luxurious Italian fabric with iconic Scandinavian design, resulting in a soft, elegant version of this classic piece.
Find out more about this classic design: Series 7 chair.
Fritz Hansen’s design team has selected cotton velvet by Redaelli Velluti in three vibrant colours: Misty Rose, Autumn Red and Grey Blue. Powder coated steel legs in Brown Bronze compliment the velvets upholstery, adding subtlety and depth.
‘Popular colours give this iconic design an update. Doing so in velvet adds to its relevancy,’ says Fritz Hansen’s Head of Design, Christian Andresen.
The fabric of the moment, velvet has always been a luxury. Difficult to produce and upholster, with a rich depth of colour and texture from the cut and uncut woven pile, velvet was only available to the very elite until quite recently.
The combination of the Series 7™ design and velvet upholstery strikes a delicate balance between formality and simplicity, form and function, past and future. It can be used as a stand-out accent chair or simple seating with a luxurious edge, for modern dining.
