Design Classic: Wedgwood Jasperware
Designer: Josiah Wedgwood, 1774
Details: Porcelain Christmas tree decorations, from £25, Wedgwood
A true English classic, Wedgwood Jasperware has been a star player in British dining rooms since visionary master potter Josiah Wedgwood introduced it to society in 1774.
Crafted in his independent Staffordshire pottery from the finest unglazed vitreous stoneware and graced with exquisite classical and contemporary reliefs, each creation feels like a luxury piece of history.
Although there are many shades in the Wedgwood colour wheel, from cream Queen’s Ware to Black Basalt, it is the delicate light blue and white Jasper design that is most synonymous with the brand.
In fact, ‘Wedgwood Blue’ is every bit as famous and recognisable as America’s ‘Tiffany Blue’.
Today, Wedgwood remains true to Josiah’s exacting standards, with many of its products still hand-finished using techniques that date back to the company’s beginnings more than 250 years ago.
And with its royal warrant, innovative new product ranges and undoubted quality, it remains a welcome guest at the banquets of both royals and heads of state – what’s the betting these show-stopping future heirloom baubles will be given a top spot on the trees at Buckingham Palace and the White House this Christmas...
