When it comes to getting your home holiday-ready, interior designer Nate Berkus has a smart trick he uses each year to fill his home with a little festive sparkle.

Nate Berkus shot to fame as one of the most famous interior designers in the US after first appearing on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2002. Since then he has featured in a number of interior design TV shows, including The Nate & Jeremiah Home Project which launched this year on HGTV.

In a number of interviews over the years Nate has revealed that filling a series of bowls with metallic ornaments is the Christmas decorating idea he uses to get his own home holiday-ready.

Rather than filling every surface with festive greenery and sparkly decorations, the interior design says he prefers a more refined holiday approach.

‘A holiday look can be as simple as hanging a garland of white lights on a staircase and setting metallic ornaments in silver bowls on top of a table,’ he said in an interview with Marie Clare.

In a segment for the Rachel Ray Show, Nate’s partner Jeremiah Brent revealed that the couple also uses the silver bowl trick as part of their holiday dinner table ideas.

Placing a silver bowl down on the table, Jeremiah explains that they are filled with a mix of ornaments and geodes they have collected. ‘They give beautiful ambient lighting and are rich in texture. You just put them in a simple silver bowl.’

The trick might sound simple, but it is a cost-effective way to create a lovely display with the crockery you use all year round. Nate isn’t the only interior designer to employ the bauble bowl trick, Shea McGee is also a fan.

In a recent post on the Studio McGee blog, Shea revealed that she was going to be branching out from only putting ornaments on the Christmas tree this year.

‘This year, we’re styling ours in bowls, adding them to stockings for extra personality, and even using smaller ornaments as the finishing touch on our gifts wrapped under the tree!’ she says.

If you are tempted to try styling your own bauble bowl we expect The White Company Black Friday sale will have plenty of lovely vessels and ornaments to stock up on. However, the beauty of this tip is that you can achieve it with things you already have lying around your home.

So start digging through your ornaments and start decorating with baubles like an interior designer this year.
