These intricate patterns are also reproduced as digital prints, which are used across the full collection of contemporary products. In the judging room, the panel got so excited about the riotous use of colour.

“This range is completely unexpected and joyous” says Linda Boronkay. “I love the way she applied her original inspiration so well.”

The judges also wanted to award the Design Icon status to the Olio collection for Royal Doulton. It's an enduring classic the panel felt was worth honouring.

First launched in 2015, British designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby have worked with Royal Doulton to update their ever-popular black and white Olio collection in a new celadon blue. Designed for daily use, pieces can be combined to create a set or curated as objects to be used individually.

“The organic shapes are modern, but not cold” says Pip McCormac. “They’re not what you’d expect from Royal Doulton and are very useable.”
