This modern Kensington mews shows how a bold color scheme should be done
A brilliant experiment in pairing modern architecture with bright colors, this mews home in London is utterly unique
If proof was ever needed that pink is a great color choice for modern decor, then this gorgeous mews house in London's exclusive Kensington is it. In fact, the house uses color (not just pink) in some of the boldest ways we've seen. Even normally tricky colors like bright yellow really sing as part of the edgy decorating scheme.
Not many modern homes go quite as far in embracing bright color, but here architect Ian Hogarth's sleek design and the owners' appetite for cutting edge design have combined to create something truly special.
Firstly, there's the extraordinary hot pink extension and private garden. When most people think of pink in the home, they'll probably consider pink bedroom ideas or a pink bathroom, at a push. Here, however, an apologetic, hot pink shade has been chosen for the kitchen-diner extension and the garden wall. The result is vibrant and warm.
Greens and yellows also form a big part of the home's decor. We really like the fact that the yellow is almost neon – because it's used in a smaller bedroom, it doesn't overpower it, lending a contemporary art twist to what otherwise would have been a plain room.
Greens, yellows, and purples accentuate the dramatic, five-meter basement space that looks part like Alice in Wonderland and part futuristic hotel. The soft, pastel shades chosen here prevent the basement space from looking too severe, but the overall effect is still smart and contemporary.
The signature hot pink makes another appearance – in the home cinema. The use of neon in home decor is not everyone's cup of tea, but here it absolutely works. The candy-floss colors lend a slightly retro feel to the space, reminding us of the color scheme of classic American diners and drive-through cinemas.
Finally, have you ever thought of purple as the color of choice for bathroom lighting? Because it really works, as part of an en suite like no other we've seen. The all-white space is transformed into something that reminds us both of a spa and a dancefloor (and believe us or not, this house also does have its own dancefloor).
Russell Garden Mews is on sale for £3,850,000 by The Modern House.
