Designers have embraced the calmness of a curved sofa – and encourage us to join the trend

Above all else, sofas are celebrated for their comforting qualities – but that doesn’t mean we should sacrifice their aesthetic. We are, therefore, inevitably excited to see the rise of a trend that combines both comfort and an unrivaled style: Curved sofas. 

These painfully chic pieces of modern living room furniture are having quite the moment in designer homes worldwide, from London’s Pitzhanger Manor to Paris’s 8th arrondissement. It’s only natural, therefore, that we all follow suit. Still need convincing? Why are curved sofas trending? 

According to Designer Stéphanie Coutas, curved sofas are a response to the previous year and the need to bring something that is both new and comforting into our interiors. 

‘As we’ve been going through hard times, people are looking for a softer feeling inside their homes which involves having curved shapes. These sofas have a new kind of curve; it could be one, two, or even three different shapes like ovals. There is a lovely, new feeling about it,’ Stéphanie says. However, she is not alone in her adoration of these statement sofas, as the designers at NOOOR similarly recognize their appeal.

‘They allow us to simplify the arrangement of seating in a living room. The curvature provides more conviviality and a calmness. Although the sofa is bigger, it takes up less space,’ explains Founders Séverine Rebout, Laurent Klein, and Philippe Tasso. 

How to style curved sofas – to accentuate their style

Combine classic & contemporary 

It is perhaps no surprise that the NOOOR team are curved sofa enthusiasts. They are responsible for pairing the nude-colored masterpiece (above) against the most iconic of backdrops – from a historic Haussmanian apartment. The quintessential ambiance of the apartment creates a certain juxtaposition against the wholly modern furnishing – and the result is majestic. 

‘We chose this round sofa from Roche Bobois (Bruno Moinard Éditions) to allow the different guests who will sit on this sofa to see the Eiffel Tower,’ Séverine, Laurent and Philippe share. While we can’t all bathe in the splendor of a Parisian apartment, we can still showcase our curved sofa against our home’s most traditional features, from a period fireplace to an ornate high ceiling; the combinations are endless.

Pair the sofa alongside another statement piece – for the ultimate focal point 

One way to ensure your living room is the most lusted-over space of the season? Add another focal point. ‘Put the rounded sofa around a strong central element such as a colored rug, for example, or a round coffee table on which you can put beautiful objects of art or sculptures,’ the NOOOR team suggests.

Choose a piece that adds warmth to a space 

‘When it comes to designing a living room, sofas are one of the most important furniture pieces to think about as they invite people in and provide a warm addition to the space. A sofa can also be a statement piece, and a design such as De Sede’s DS-600 immediately brings a modern flair into the room,’ shares founders of Le Berre Vevaud, Raphaël Le Berre, and Thomas Vevaud.
