The doorbell comes with a compact wireless chime, which alerts you (with a choice of six sounds) even without your phone - something we found invaluable while testing. With two-way audio and remote access to the live feed through the app, you can monitor your home remotely from anywhere. Best Ring doorbell if you don't need advanced features

The standard 2020 model of the Ring Video Doorbell is a reliable and affordable option for anyone looking for a smart doorbell with all of the basic features. It offers 1080p video quality and other expected features, but unlike newer Ring models, it doesn't have a convenient battery release function. You can wire it to the remains, but the battery itself can't be replaced - meaning that, during testing, we had to remove the entire device when it was time to recharge.

However, it remains a great option for those on more of a budget and is reliable, with two-way communication and real-time alerts working seamlessly. The setup process is also straightforward, with an easy-to-use app and everything you need right out of the box.

Best 2K wireless doorbell

The Arlo Essential Video Doorbell Wire-Free provides crystal-clear video and excellent two-way talkback but loses some points by requiring a monthly subscription fee. That said, the features that come with this add-on cost are well worth it, with a handy built-in siren, customizable motion detection, and 1080p HD video, all making this a great, affordable, and easy-to-use option.

During our testing, we found that daytime video footage was much clearer compared to night, and the talkback feature was more refined than we've seen on other doorbells. The modern and simple design makes it an ideal fit for any home.

Will my wireless doorbell work with Alexa/Google Home?

Compatibility with your smart home hub will depend on the wireless doorbell you buy, but, generally speaking, Ring doorbells will always work with Amazon Alexa smart speakers and displays. The same goes for Ring Alarms and other security products, as they all come under the same banner.

Similarly, Nest products come from Google and so will work well with a Google-branded doorbell. Anything else will vary, so it's important to check before buying.

Once set up, we absolutely love how some of the best wireless doorbells work with smart displays such as the Echo Show or Nest Hub, allowing you to see what's going on outside from the comfort of your kitchen or bedroom.

Are video doorbells safe?
